A Visited States Map Generator

Ever since I posted my “Visited States Map,” hand-made in Illustrator and color-coded according to how much time I've actually spent in each state, I've had it in my head that I should write a program to generate that map. I finally have.

I wasn't happy with any of the map generators out there; image quality aside, I felt they could easily overstate the case by filling in states I've barely spent any time in at all. How could I fill in a state I just drove through without even seeing anything the same as one where I've spent weeks at a time on multiple visits? Also, why should the maps be limited to just a few pre-set sizes? Why do they clutter the view with Alaska and Hawaii if you haven't been to either?

My brand-new Visited States Map Generator will let you create your own map, color-coded, by filling in the states you've been to. Maps are generated in PNG format, at any reasonable size, for you to save to your computer and use in whatever way you like – on your blog, in your signature for forum posts, even printed in a photo book. You set the size, and Alaska and Hawaii are only included if you give them a color.

So, whether you're an RVer or a road-tripper, click the map to get started, and show us where you've been!
